Exercise Physiology

Exercise Physiologists (EPs) are allied health professionals who are experts in prescribing exercise.

Whilst we expect elite athletes to have the best services that exercise science can offer (from Exercise and Sports Scientists), EPs are professionals that also work with everyday people to improve health, fitness, and performance and prevent chronic disease through exercise.

Exercise is medicine

EPs are well placed to prescribe exercise for both the prevention and treatment of lifestyle related diseases like diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, cancer and arthritis. It is also better than any tablet in treating depression and anxiety (especially in young people). An EP will assess your needs, your lifestyle, your existing diseases and injuries, your preferences and work with you to create an individualised exercise program. They can supervise you and progress your schedule over time in order to reach the goals you have established.

What is the difference between an “Exercise Physiologist” and a “Personal Trainer”?

An EP has completed 4 years university training (at minimum). They hold Medicare provider numbers and can qualify for private health fund rebates because of their status as allied health professionals. They are specialised in exercise prescription and supervision of those with medical problems.  A personal trainer will usually hold a certificate or perhaps a diploma requiring much less training. They are well placed to supervise, motivate and train healthy individuals or those considered “low risk”.

Exercise Physiologists can help people with:

  • Injuries or accidents e.g. in the workplace
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Heart disease
  • Recovery from surgery
  • Cancer
  • Creating a healthy exercise habit

If you have any of these conditions, or don’t know where to start with developing a safe, individualised exercise program, consider making an appointment with our EP.
